Liebe Griechen,

Dear Greeks,

Τhis is a public letter from a 36 year old European born in Germany. You don’t know me and you probably wonder why I am writing to you. I would like to introduce myself personally and why I am writing to you – and also what I am inviting you to. Take a frappe, wine, beer or water – I thank you for the time to read this letter.

I was born 1983 in Aachen. It is located in the western part of Germany and right at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium. Cologne is one hour away by car and train. I still experienced how there were controls at the border and we had a different currency for each country. I can also remember the drachma. Already in 1987 I went to Greece for the first time. Together with my parents, my brother and my grandparents. There the foundation stone for my love for Greece was laid. Since then I have been a guest in Greece every year. Also through the friendship of my grandfather to one of the first guest workers from Greece is important. They became friends when “Mitsou” from Patras helped my grandfather when he was injured at work. Since then our families have been close friends – now in the third generation. For me, Giorgos Dalaras and Locomondo belong in the daily playlist on spotify. My favourite dish is Pastitio – and I am homesick for Koroni (Messinia).

My wife said in 2013, when she accompanied me to Greece for the first time, that this was like getting to know the rest of my family. I have no Greek ancestors, and yet it feels the same: Greece is somehow a piece of my homeland. And when the crisis began, I thought, what can I do? How can I help? I have a business idea in my drawer, but its implementation proved to be very difficult – partly because the Greek bureaucracy is a high hurdle.

The crisis in Greece has motivated me to get politically involved. The crisis in Greece exposed the systemic failures in Greece, Germany and Europe. I was annoyed and disappointed how politicians dealt with the sovereign state of Greece. Credit is not the solution. Neither for Germany, nor for Greece. The price is paid by our children and grandchildren.

I want you to know that we Germans have a heart. We are rarely able to show it. After the Second World War our society has rebuilt our country with diligence and structure. But in doing so we lost sight of the need to work on an equal level with those who have forgiven us a lot.The demands for reparation payments coming from Athens are outdated in my opinion.  It is undisputed that Germany is still not making any effort to come to terms with the situation in an appropriate and conclusive manner. That embarrasses me.

I am also ashamed that Germany and Europe are leaving Greece alone with the refugees. That is inhuman and against all human dignity.

You should know that many Germans like to forget how well we are doing here. What we have and how safe we are. They also don’t like to admit this in public. Humility has unfortunately degenerated into a foreign word.

As a consequence, the nationalist and right-wing movement is gaining momentum in all European countries. The mistakes of politics are mixed up with racism, homophobia and discrimination. That is dangerous. In Germany it is the Afd, in Greece the Chrysi Avgi.

This development was the beginning of getting politically active. I am also dissatisfied with politics in Germany and Europe. Economy, poverty, climate, education, health and democracy have problems everywhere. Believe it or not: Germany is perhaps richer and more prosperous, but even here the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. We also have poor infrastructure such as railways and the internet access. The lack of understanding is growing too.

I would like to tackle it and make a difference. But the most important thing was how my friends in Greece are doing. That makes me sad. But I admire the courage and determination with which this difficult situation is overcome every day. I have deep respect for this.

With this letter, I would like to say that you are not alone. I want you to know that there are many people like me who are dissatisfied with the way things are going politically. In Italy, in Austria, in Germany, in Portugal and in every other European country. With this letter I would like to invite you to stand up and make a change. Here is my invitation!

I joined the Volt Europa party in 2018, the first party to work on a pan-European level. We have developed a programme for all over Europe and we continue to write it every day. Everyone of you can take part! In the European elections we elected a member of the European Parliament: Damian Boeselager.

His grandfather was involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler and he brought a breath of fresh air to Brussels. Every day he tries to ensure that the people of Lesbos, for example, are distributed and received throughout Europe. He advocates a new and better migration policy. He visited Moria and Lesbos as a politician and does not mince his words. He is not an German politician. He is the first european Politician and takes care of every european citizen. He is also a Greek Member of Parliament

We have many common challenges. And with Volt there is a party now, that is pursuing new visions and ideas. We can learn from each other. For example, the education system in Germany as a means of combating youth unemployment. We can develop much of Greece in the field of energy and environment and how to manage crises.

The European Union is an opportunity – but it must be reformed. I invite you to do this together with thousands of Europeans. Let’s stop being angry and disappointed. Let us build something new together. Especially the coronavirus shows how important social life and humanity is. We need a more social and human Europe. A Europe that puts its citizens in the centre.

Without a European Union we would be 28 individual states. Our companies would be swallowed up by Chinese, Russian and American corporations. As individual states we are small fish in a shark ocean.Europe is the big whale – not always fast – but strong and durable.  We only have a future if we work together.

I invite you to join us. I invite you to work at Volt Europa for a better Europe. And if you don’t want to do it with us, do it in another democratic party! Volt is pan-European, pragmatic and progressive. Only as a team can we make a better Europe for our children and grandchildren.

Yours Friedrich
